Active Transportation & Accessibility Plan Presentation & Workshop

Join the City of Belfast Pedestrian Transportation and Accessibility Committee at the Boathouse on Wednesday, December 4th, from 6:00 to 7:45 pm, when we’ll debut the city’s first Active Transportation & Accessibility Plan!

Led by Mike Lydon, of the planning firm Street Plans, we’ll discuss the overall plan—now in draft form—and some of its key recommendations, including improved Rt. 1 crossings; sidewalks and bike lanes along the Rt. 1 bypass, Swan Lake Ave., and Lincolnville Ave.; and safer routes to school.

If approved by the City Council, the plan will serve as a prioritized agenda of projects to improve Belfast’s quality of life for years to come. Please attend and be part of the process!

Plan Kick-Off Summary

Thanks to all who participated in the plan's kick-off activities! In total we had nearly 40 people participate in the Handlebar and Walkabout Surveys, as well as 40 participants who joined in the Kick-Off Workshop. Feedback gathered during these activities will be used to directly shape the plan's recommendations.

What is The Belfast Active Transportation & Accessibility Plan?

Belfast is working with the Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Street Plans, an internationally recognized urban planning, design, architecture, and transportation planning practice, to develop an Active Transportation and Accessibility Plan that will guide the creation of safer streets and more dynamic public spaces in the city. Active transportation includes modes such as walking, cycling, and wheelchair use. This project was brought forth by the City's Pedestrian, Transportation & Accessibility Committee.

Funded by the City of Belfast, with a matching grant awarded through MDOT’s Planning Partnership Initiative, the planning process will aim first to understand the needs and aspirations of Belfast residents regarding active, or human-powered transportation using an on-the-ground approach.

The project's scope encompasses the entirety of Belfast, with a particular focus on Route 1 crossings, facilitating safe, accessible connections between urban and rural zones, and expanding active transportation facilities outward from downtown. The resulting plan document will serve as a blueprint for the evolution and management of Belfast's active transportation network in the future.
