5. Are there any lots available at the cemetery?

The City of Belfast has seven cemeteries in various locations throughout the City. Residents and nonresidents may purchase lots. If you are interested in purchasing a lot, please contact Cemetery Superintendent Steve Boguen at (207) 338-2264.

1. How do I submit a FOAA (Freedom of Access) request?

The City of Belfast's Freedom of Access Officer is the Communications Assistant. Mackenzie Barnhart in the City Manager's Office. 

To submit a FOAA request, please fill out this form and submit it to the Communications Assistant. You may submit a request via email, mail, or in person. 

To send a FOAA request via email, please fill out the FOAA form above and send it to communications@cityofbelfast.org.

To send a FOAA request via mail, please mail the FOAA form to 131 Church Street, Belfast, Maine 04915 ATTN: Mackenzie Barnhart. 

You may also drop off or fill out a FOAA form in the City Manager's Office at City Hall, located on the first floor.

1. How do I register to vote?

The State of Maine allows residents to register to vote anytime, including the day of the election. Residents of Belfast may register to vote at the City clerk's office:

Proof of residency and proof of identity are required to register.

3. When are elections scheduled?

The municipal election is now held at the same time as the State of Maine general and referendum elections, held on the Tuesday following the first Monday in November. The referendum on the budget is held on the second Tuesday in June. The primary election is held on the second Tuesday in June of each general election year.

1. If I call 9-1-1, how long will it take for police to arrive?

All calls to the Belfast Police Department are received through the Waldo Regional Communications Center. Every call is prioritized according to the seriousness of the incident and location. The communications officers may not be able to provide you with a response time as many calls may be received at once.

2. How do I find out if school has been cancelled?

Please do not call the Police Department to find out if school has been canceled. The school district will notify the television and radio stations should school be canceled or delayed. These are your best sources for this information.

3. How can I obtain a copy of my criminal record?

Requests for criminal records should be directed to the State Bureau of Identification:

4. How can I obtain a concealed firearms permit?

To obtain or renew a concealed firearms permit, please pick up an application from the Police Department:

The fee is $35 for a new permit and $20 for a permit renewal.

5. How can I obtain a permit to operate an uninspected motor vehicle?

Permits to operate an uninspected motor vehicle can be obtained at the Police Station:

Station hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm, and Saturday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

6. How can I obtain a copy of my arrest report?

To obtain a copy of an arrest report, please contact the district attorney's office at (207) 338-2512.

7. How can I obtain a copy of a traffic crash report?

You may request a copy of a traffic crash report in person or by mail. Copies of incidents that are currently under investigation will not be released until completed. There is a fee of $5 for the first page and $1 for each additional page.

For requests by mail, please send a brief note that includes your name, return address, and the date of your incident to the Belfast Police Department:

1. How do I renew my driver's license?

A driver's license can be renewed through the Maine Department of Motor Vehicles:

Licenses can also be renewed through the Motor Vehicle Mobile Unit which visits Belfast on the second Thursday of each month at:

The mobile unit is available from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm, and from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

2. What should I do if I can't find proof of insurance?

You can have your proof of insurance faxed directly from your insurance agent. Proof of insurance should be faxed to the tax office at (207) 338-6222.

3. What if I don't pay my taxes on time?

Taxes are usually billed in September and are due in early-October. Interest begins the day after the due date. Eight to 10 months after billing, the lien process begins. A 30-day demand letter will be sent to notify the assessed owner. If taxes are not paid in full at the end of the 30-day period, a lien is placed on the property and recorded at the Waldo County Register of Deeds.
