2017 Belfast Harbor Safety Notice

BELFAST HARBOR SAFETY? REMINDERS?:


SMALL NON-POWERED PADDLE VESSELS - Avoid the channel in areas with poor visibility and large vessel traffic such as around the City Landing and Inner Harbor - Always be aware? other? vessels may not see you? - especially larger vessels,? or may not be able to stop or change course?.

LARGE and ALL ?OTHER? POWERED VESSELS - Maintain steerage speed ?ONLY, in ALL areas of the channel and mooring field - Watch your wake! Serious injuries and damage may occur from other vessels and docks or floats being tossed around.

KNOW THE RULES OF THE ROAD - Keep to the right in the channel - Know who has the right of way - Be attentive to other vessel traffic and activities - Maintain radio contact at all times on VHF channel 16.

SWIMMING IN BELFAST HARBOR - Swimmers are very difficult to see from a vessel and are unexpected - Swimmers should stay close to shore and away from ?all ?areas with vessel traffic.

?PASSENGER SAFETY - All boaters should wear life-jackets at all times but children 10 years of age and under are required to wear life jackets (they may be borrowed at the Harbor Office) - Never allow anyone to ride on the bow with their feet dangling over the side. A vessel can not be stopped quickly enough to avoid a potential serious accident.

KNOW THE CONDITIONS - Strong currents & winds, squalls, thunderstorms, fog, and even reflecting sunlight, all contribute to the need to pay attention! Always check the weather before heading out.

USE COMMON SENSE - BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHERS & HAVE A SAFE SEASON ON OUR HARBOR!
